Methodist Missionaries had served the region since 1859 but there was no organized Methodist Society until 1876. The Methodist Society was served by Rev. W.T. Thornberry (1877-1879) then by Rev. Andrew Jackson Potter (1879-1881) as part of their mission region prior to the church receiving its official 1881 charter.
